1955
28 November The municipal and provincial administrations and the Chambers of Commerce of Chieti and Pescara announced the Ministry of Education their intention to form a consortium for setting up a ‘Libera Università’ (non state-owned) University in Chieti.
1960
23 June The Prefect of Chieti approves the establishment of the University Consortium of Abruzzo that includes the Chamber of Commerce, Cassa di Risparmio and more than 60 municipalities.
1961
5 October First meeting of the Technical Committee of the Faculty of Literature, Arts and Philosophy of Chieti, monitored by Prof. Ettore Paratore, for the assignment of the first teaching positions.
12 November Inaugural ceremony, in Chieti, of the Corsi Liberi Universitari University courses.
3 December Inaugural ceremony, at the Salone dei Marmi of the Province of Pescara, of the Business and Economics courses with adjoining Course of Foreign Languages and Literature; opening speech by Prof. Carlo Izzo.
1963
28 January The organising committee send an official request to the Minister of Education for the establishment of Libera Università degli Abruzzi.
5 August Meeting, in Chieti, of Parliamentarians and Administrators of Chieti, Pescara and Teramo to decide the unification of these three university consortia in one Interprovincial Consortium.
1964
12 September The Consortium for Libera Università Abruzzese is recognised as a legal entity between the municipalities and the provinces of Chieti, Pescara and Teramo.
1965
3 March The Minister of Education Hon. Luigi Gui signed a decree of Recognition of the Libera Università Abruzzese degli Studi "Gabriele d'Annunzio".
8 May Libera Università Abruzzese degli Studi "Gabriele d'Annunzio" is legally recognised by the Decree of the President of the Republic No. 1007. The Rector and the Faculty of Literature, Arts and Philosophy are located in Chieti; the Faculty of Economics and Business, in Pescara, with an adjoining course of Foreign Languages and Literature; the Faculty of Law, in Teramo.
13 October Prof. Renato Balzarini is elected first Rector of the ‘Libera Università Abruzzese degli Studi Gabriele d'Annunzio’.
12 November The first Board of Directors is settled, composed of 14 members, monitored by the Rector Renato Balzarini.
1966
19 March The Inaugural ceremony of the first academic year 1965/66 is held in Pescara with the presence of the Minister of Education. Hon. Luigi Gui.
1969
8 July The Faculty of Medicine and Surgery (two-year period) and the Faculty of Political Science were established in Chieti and Teramo by the publication on the Official Gazette No. 170 of Presidential Decree No. 327 of 19 June 1969.
1970
9 March The Faculty of Architecture in Pescara, limited to the first two years, is legally recognised by the Presidential Decree No. 441.
1971
30 October The Course of Foreign Languages and Literature, which is separated from Business and Economics, is established by Presidential Decree No.1317 (published in the Official Journal No. 47 of 21.02.1972).
1978
25 February The members of the Academic staff, gathered at the offices of Madonna delle Piane, elect Prof. Bruno Cavallo as Rector for the period 1978-80.
1979
21 December The members of the Academic staff elect Prof. Aldo Bernardini as Rector, to replace Prof. Bruno Cavallo, resigning.
1982
29 April The ‘Gabriele d'Annunzio’ University of Chieti becomes a State university with the approval of the Senate of the Republic.
23 June Prof. Aldo Bernardini is re-elected Rector for the period 82/85.
1985
12 June Prof. Uberto Crescenti is elected Rector for the period 85/88.
1988
20 February With the presence of Minister of Education, Hon. Giovanni Galloni, the seat of the university on Viale Pindaro is inaugurated in Pescara.
11 May Prof. Uberto Crescenti is confirmed as Rector for the period 1988-91.
1989
1 September The Faculties of Pharmacy in Chieti and of Veterinary Medicine in Teramo are established.
1990
2 December Prof. Albert Bruce Sabin is awarded the "Honoris Causa" degree in Medicine and Surgery.
1991
5 March The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature assigns the "Honoris Causa" degree to the Film Director, Michelangelo Antonioni.
15 May Prof. Uberto Crescenti is confirmed as Rector, for the third time, for the period 1991-94.
1992
14 April The Faculty of Science is established with degree course in Geology.
1993
1 November The faculties based in Teramo are separated from the d’Annunzio University.
1994
17 May Prof. Uberto Crescenti is confirmed as Rector, for the fourth time, for the period 1994-97.
1997
11 June Prof. Franco Cuccurullo is elected Rector for the period 1997-2000.
1998
24 January Inauguration of the Museum of Biomedical Sciences.
1999
30 October The Research/training hospital of Madonna delle Piane is inaugurated in Chieti.
2000
20 March Signing of Memorandum of Understanding for the creation of an Institute of Hospitalisation and Treatment for Scientific Purposes with the presence of the Minister of Health, Hon. Rosy Bindi.
13 April The Continuing Education Centre (CEC) is inaugurated in Torrevecchia Teatina.
10 May Prof. Franco Cuccurullo is re-elected Rector of d’Annunzio for the period 2000-2003.
30 May The seat of the SSIS is inaugurated in Chieti, at the De Pasquale palace.
16 December Program agreement for the construction of the new university campus of Pescara in the area of Viale Pindaro. The protocol was signed by the Mayor of Pescara, Carlo Pace, by the President of the Province, Giuseppe De Dominicis, and by the Rector Franco Cuccurullo.
2001
April MURST funds the Centre of Excellence on Aging of the University "G. d'Annunzio". The Centre assumes great national importance since it is the first and unique in our country to be assigned to research and assistance on diseases of the elderly and the activities of continuous staff education and training.
27 May First heart transplant in Abruzzo performed by the team led by Prof. Calafiore, a professor of cardiac surgery at d'Annunzio and coordinator of the department of cardiac surgery at Local Health Authority (ASL) of Chieti. From 24 January 2001, the Ministry of Health authorised the Hospital of the University "G. d'Annunzio".
2002
February The d’Annunzio University opens four new faculties: Management Sciences becomes independent with respect to the Faculty of Economics; the course of Sports Science detaches from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery; and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Psychology arises from a branch of the Faculty of Literature, Arts and Philosophy. Thus, the University reaches the total number of eleven faculties.
March In order to meet the increase of the student population, the second academic centre of the campus of Madonna delle Piane and several classrooms for the students of the Faculty of Psychology are under construction. The facilities are to be opened shortly.
May After only seven years, the city of Chieti and the University d'Annunzio hosted again the National University Championships, one of the most important and most prestigious in the rich national sports calendar. The 56th edition sees the presence of champions, such as the Olympic fencing champion Valentina Vezzali and the jumper, Antonietta Di Martino.

16 April Inauguration of Ce.S.I. (Science Centre on Aging) with the presence of Minister Letizia Moratti

7 April The ‘Università Gabriele d'Annunzio’ Foundation is among the accredited providers for remote teaching of physicians and health care professionals.
May Ce.S.I. is recognised as a Special Consultant to the Economic and Social Council of the UN.
7 July The Faculty of Medicine celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of the first session of graduation.
2005
February Establishment and activation of the ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ E-learning University.
28 March Inauguration, in Chieti, of the new building of the Museum of Biomedical Sciences. The initiative is due to an intense synergy between Ud'A, the Archaeological Superintendence, the City of Chieti and Cassa di Risparmio.

6 April The Faculty of “Education Sciences” is inaugurated, the twelfth faculty of the University.
17 May Prof. Franco Cuccurullo is re-elected Rector of d’Annunzio for the period 2006-2009.
