The CEISA is an independent, interdisciplinary body recognized by the Abruzzo Region (Law No. 1 of 12 January 2016). Through the training of specialized personnel, it promotes the application of the principles of Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement (the 3Rs”) in scientific research involving animals. In addition, CEISA provides consultancy and opinions, also available English, on research projects falling within the categories excluded under Legislative Decree No. 26 of 4 March 2014, Articles 1 and 2.The CEISA is composed of expert members (from one to three per center) designated by the three Universities of the Abruzzo Region — the “G. d’Annunzio” University of Chieti–Pescara, the University of Teramo, and the University of L’Aquila — as well as by the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise “G. Caporale” in Teramo (Regulations on the functioning of CEISA).The CEISA operates under the mandate of the Rectors of the member Universities and of the Director General of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise “G. Caporale” in Teramo.Further important objectives pursued by CEISA include: a) the promotion of professional training in the field of laboratory animal science; b) postgraduate education within doctoral programs in scientific disciplines related to animal experimentation.
